STRATEGY LAB

You make an impact. There's more to do.

You have some ideas. They seem impossible.

Change your mindset. Start exploring "yes."
People in our communities have so many needs.
We do the best we can, but we feel constrained.
We make assumptions and treat them as facts.
We've gotten very used to saying "we can't."
We need to test the limitations we've accepted.
If we blow up the narrative, "more" is possible.

Enter the Laboratory
We created the Strategy Lab to provide a focused, creative space to explore "big ideas"... the innovations left behind when non-profits assume they can't make them happen. The Lab's rapid, collaborative, and rather affordable format gives non-profits a chance to evaluate out-of-the box initiatives against real-world conditions to see if they'll deliver, and if they're realistic.

How the Lab Works
-
Problem Statement
What's keeping you up at night? It may be localized or systemic. We'll need a clear definition for starters.
-
Solution Concept
What's your "big idea?" The Lab is here to push the limits, so bring your innovative thoughts to the table.
-
Starting Hypothesis
What impacts do you think your idea will have? We'll get specific, talking through the "whats" and "whys."
-
Experimentation
What happens if...? We'll apply logic-based scenario and variable testing to see if and how your idea can deliver.
-
Results Analysis
Did we get to the anticipated results? We'll analyze outcomes and inputs, and evaluate feasibility and risks.
-
Laboratory Report
What did you learn? What will you do? We'll provide the information you need to make sound decisions.

Is the Strategy Lab right for my non-profit?
The Lab is for you if you've got a problem to solve and, while you'd really like to, you're assuming it's just not possible. We're looking for the visionaries and the leaders who've given things some thought, but don't see how innovative solutions could ever be achieved given their non-profits' constraints and the conditions around them. The Lab is designed to "push the envelope, abandoning preconceptions and discovering potential, in a rapid, creative, and affordable way.
-
I see the process, but what's it really like?
It's highly interactive, involving a series of virtual meetings and some off-line work on both our parts. That said, it definitely won't require your 24x7 atttention, so you can rest easy you won't be overwhelmed. The goal of the Lab environment is to test ideas using scnearios and considering variables relevant to your specific situation, learnign how we get the outcomes and identifying the resources, conditions and other things needed to achive them. We'll guide you, but we need you too!
-
What do I get at the end of my time in the Lab?
When the analysis is completed, we provide a Laboratory Report summarizing the process and results. The report includes modifications to the original solution, as appropriate, and analysis of the outcomes, dependencies, and requirements. Finally, we provide an evaluation of feasibility, tradeoffs, risks and, as applicable, incremental phasing approaches. All of this will enable you to make informed decisions on whether and how to proceed.
-
How long does this take, and what does it cost?
TIming depends to an extent on, and is flexible to, your availability to participate. The complexity of the problem and solution also matter. Typically, though, you can expect four one- to two-hour meetings over a few weeks, and get your results and next steps in a about a month. Using the Lab typically costs $2,000—$4,000, though it may be less or, occasionally, more. You'll know before you start, and the price we quote won't change.
-
Why shouldn't we just do strategic planning?
It's possible that's the better approach for your non-profit, and we'll tell you that when we have our initial, But, developing a full-scale, responsive strategy can take six to twelve months, or even longer if you're a large organization, and it is often costly. And, the innovative ideas often get left behind, considered "too big" to work. The Lab will help you find out if you've actually got something there, at fractions of the time and cost.
