What is "subsidiarity?"

Subsidiarity is the idea that community services should be planned and provided at the most local level practicable. That means responsibility for advancing the common good should lie first with local governments and non-profit organizations. Some things, however, are appropriate for higher levels of authority.

Why is this the right way to think?

Well, who knows communities' needs, conditions, cultural norms, etc. best, and who's best equipped to plan and provide services that "fit?" In many cases, the answer to both is the organizations working within their communities. So, they're often positioned to serve the public's needs, not "one-size-fits-all" programs.
