We're helping local non-profits get stronger

Welcome to Snowflake's Non-profit Consulting Assistance Program (NCAP) information page.  Every year starting in 2017, we've given free consulting services to one or more local community service organizations to help them do greater things, for thee greater good. We do this to advance our mission of helping organizations that transform lives and communities, and as part of our commitment to society that's enshrined in the Certified B Corporation® status we've proudly held since 2017.

Assistance is available in four main areas of expertise:

  • Strategic Planning
  • Organizational Improvement
  • People Strategies
  • Client and Donor Marketing

We are now taking applications for 2022. Read the Eligibility Requirements before applying to make sure your non-profit meets the criteria for the program. The application process consists of the written form (below) and a follow-up interview. It is important, especially (but not only) is you are interested in Strategic Planning, that your Board of Directors is aware and supportive of your request. As such, you will need to demonstrate your Board's commitment during the second stage of the application process.

Program Eligibility
So, we wouldn’t necessarily say there are “strings attached,” but we do have some conditions that non-profits need to meet to be considered for out NCAP. They’re listed below, and any organization that can meet them is welcome to apply. We do have to state, however, that even if your non-profit meets all of these requirements, we can’t guarantee acceptance into the program.  That depends on who else applies, what they need, and their financial situations, our capacity to help, and our ability to make a difference through the services we provide.

First, the preliminaries—the basic eligibility requirements (i.e., If you don’t meet them, don't apply). To qualify, non-profits must:
  • Be willing to contribute up to one quarter of the value of the project, not over $2,000*
  • Provide services and use methods compatible with our company’s Catholic values
  • Be willing to sign an agreement of scope, duration, responsibilities, etc. of engagement
  • Ensure leadership has the time and interest to participate within a fixed duration
  • Agree to allow us to publicize the organization’s name and details of the services provided
  • Be open to virtual support - services will be primarily provided remotely
  • Agree to provide solid references to our prospective clients about our work and its outcome
We evaluate applications relative to the others in the pool.† Past non-profit grantees have demonstrated how, for example, they:
  • Assist those in need, create socio-economic opportunity, and promote human dignity
  • Provide programs and services that address significant social and community needs
  • Are stable and sustainable, or can become so through the NCAP and/or other initiatives
  • Have the potential to transform lives and/or communities, with our assistance
  • Have relatively strong Boards committed to taking actions necessary to fulfill their missions
  • Cannot reasonably pay more than 25% of the discounted cost for the requested support
  • Are able to measure the outcomes of their services to show their contributions to society
We make no promises as to the number of non-profits we will support in any given year. Organizations that submitted strong applications in prior years but could not be accommodated at that time are generally given preference in the current year's selection process, but selection still depends on the applicants' characteristics and conditions, as well as specific details of proposed work (including but not limited to the type, scope, timeline of the project, and level of effort involved) relative to others seeking to participate in the program.

*This requirement is new this year, as studies consistently show that non-profits participate more and get more out of the project by making even small investment in the work. Valuation of projects is based on a reduced rate of $75 times estimated level of effort. This is a 40% discount from our standard rate for non-profit organizations.
†Evaluations of non-profits’ requests for NCAP participation are confidential, though we may publicly name selected non-profits on our web site, in press releases, etc,
Program Standards and Criteria

The following are the minimum requirements (i.e., If you don’t meet them, please save some time and don't apply). To qualify, non-profits must:

Applicant Review and Selection

We evaluate applicants based on qualitative and quantitative assessments relative to the others in the pool. We use established criteria and gather information by way of the application and follow-up interview(s). We do not publish the criteria, and may add or delete factors based on the types of organizations that have applied and their specific situations. Evaluations of requests for NCGs are kept confidential (i.e., not available outside of Snowflake, even to awardees). While we can't give you scoring specifics, past non-profit grantees have shown how, for example, they:
  • Assist those in need, create socio-economic opportunity, and protect human dignity
  • Provide, or plan to provide, programs and services that address significant community needs
  • Are stable and sustainable, or can become so through an NCG and/or other initiatives
  • Have the potential to transform lives and/or communities, with our assistance
  • Have relatively strong Boards committed to taking actions necessary to fulfill their missions
  • Are financially limited, and can't feasibly pay more than 25% of the cost for the requested support
  • Are able to measure the outcomes of their services to show their contributions to society
We reserve the right to decline award of an NCG to any applicants if there are none that we feel are good fits. We may re-open the application period in that event. We may also award grants to more than one non-profit if there are qualified applicants and we have the time and capability to support them. While qualified prior year applicants are given preference in the event of a "close race," selection still depends on the needs, characteristics, and conditions, the proposed work, etc. associated with all interested non-profits, relative to one another.
